What Is SEO and How Does It Work? (2026 Guide)

Summary

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work that helps your website rank higher in the unpaid results of Google and other search engines for the queries your customers type. It covers technical fixes, useful content and trust signals such as links. You do not pay per click, but SEO is ongoing work, and growth usually shows in 3–6 months.

SEO, short for search engine optimization, is how a website earns higher positions in Google’s organic (unpaid) results when people search for what you sell. When a customer types “roof repair Almaty” or “rolled metal Astana”, SEO is what helps them find you rather than a competitor. You do not pay for each click, as you do with ads. But SEO is not something you set up once and forget: it is ongoing work on the site’s technical base, content and reputation, and it takes months to pay off. Here is what SEO is, how it works and where to start.

What is SEO in simple words?

SEO means making your page the best answer to a search query and making sure search engines can see that. Search engines try to show the most relevant and useful page for every query, and SEO works on both the technical side and the content so that your page is the one they pick.

Google comes first, since it is the dominant search engine in Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Kazakhstan. But the same work also helps on Yandex, which still has a notable share of search in Kazakhstan, and on Bing, whose index powers Microsoft Copilot and which OpenAI names as a search provider for ChatGPT search.

How does SEO work?

Search engines work in three steps, and SEO helps your site at each of them:

  1. Crawling. A bot such as Googlebot, YandexBot or Bingbot follows links and sitemaps to discover pages. SEO makes sure your important pages are reachable and not blocked.
  2. Indexing. The search engine reads each page and stores what it is about. SEO makes that clear: one main topic per page, a descriptive title, proper headings and no duplicate versions.
  3. Ranking. For every query, the engine orders the indexed pages by relevance, quality, usability and context, such as the searcher’s location and language. SEO helps your page compete on each of these.

Is SEO worth it for a small business in 2026?

Yes, if your customers search for what you sell. Someone typing “plastic windows Uralsk” already wants to buy windows; they just have not chosen from whom. Organic results put you in front of that demand without paying for every visit, and a page that ranks keeps bringing visitors for as long as it stays relevant and competitors do not overtake it.

SEO also builds on itself. Every useful page you add can bring its own search traffic and pass visitors on to your service pages. That is the main difference from advertising, where traffic stops the moment you stop paying. SEO is a weak bet only when almost nobody searches for what you offer yet, for example a completely new kind of product.

What are the main types of SEO?

There are three core parts, plus local SEO for businesses that serve a particular city.

1. Technical SEO. The foundation: fast loading and good Core Web Vitals, a mobile-friendly layout, clean URLs, a sitemap, correct canonical and language tags, and structured data. A slow or badly structured site struggles no matter how good its content is, and in my experience this is the part most often neglected. For example, kaz-jol.kz, a high-performance static site for a road and asphalting company, was built with deep technical SEO.

2. On-page (content) SEO. Pages built around what customers actually search for: the right words in the title and headings, genuinely useful text, clear answers to common questions, and internal links between related pages. This article is an example: it answers one question and links to the pages that go deeper.

3. Off-page SEO. Signals from outside your site, mainly links from other trustworthy websites and mentions of your brand. A link from a relevant, reputable site works like a recommendation; bought or spammy links can do real harm.

4. Local SEO. For businesses that serve a city: an accurate Google Business Profile, consistent contact details everywhere, and a clear page for each service. The site of a window manufacturer in Atyrau, atyrau-okna.kz, was rebuilt from scratch on Astro with SEO and local search growth in mind.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Noticeable organic growth usually takes three to six months, while technical fixes can take effect within two to four weeks. SEO is a long-term investment:

  • Technical fixes: often visible within 2–4 weeks, once the pages are recrawled.
  • Organic growth: typically 3–6 months.
  • Strong positions in competitive niches: often longer, with consistent work.

If someone promises “the #1 spot on Google in a week”, be careful. No one outside Google controls its rankings, so nobody can honestly guarantee a position, and shortcuts such as bought links can get a site demoted.

Is SEO free?

Clicks from organic results are free; the work behind them is not. SEO takes audits, technical fixes, writing and updating content and earning links, and either you invest your own hours or you pay a specialist. It is also never finished: competitors keep publishing, search engines update their systems and your own site changes.

In my SEO service, a one-time audit and setup starts from $150, and ongoing optimisation from $250 per month. What each package includes is on the SEO services page.

Yes. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in the same core ranking and quality systems as regular search, and that to be eligible as a link in them a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude have their own search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot), and ChatGPT search also draws on partner search providers such as Bing. A crawlable, well-structured and genuinely useful site is therefore the base for AI visibility as well.

Optimizing for AI answers is often called GEO (generative engine optimization), and Google’s own guidance treats it as part of SEO. I explain what really helps, and which popular tricks do nothing, in what GEO is and how it differs from SEO.

Where should you start with SEO?

With an audit, not with random fixes. A sensible order is:

  1. Audit: measure the current state, including speed, technical errors, what is indexed and where you already rank.
  2. Keywords: find out what your customers actually type, in every language you serve.
  3. Technical fixes: speed, structure and indexing problems.
  4. Content: useful pages built around those queries, one main topic per page.
  5. Measure and improve: track progress in Google Search Console and Google Analytics, and in Yandex Webmaster if you target Russian-speaking users in Kazakhstan.

If your site runs on a slow template, a rebuild is sometimes faster than endless patching. When I rebuild a site, SEO is part of the project: badamplast.kz, the site of a plastic products manufacturer, was rebuilt from scratch on Astro together with SEO and search visibility work. Frequently asked questions

Should I do SEO for Google or for Yandex?

It depends on your market. Google dominates search in Azerbaijan and Türkiye. In Kazakhstan, Yandex still had about 28.5% of the search market in August 2026, according to StatCounter, so Russian-language sites there benefit from working on both. The technical base is the same for both engines.

Is SEO or paid advertising better for a small business?

They solve different problems. Ads bring visitors from the first day but stop when the budget runs out; SEO takes months but keeps working. Many businesses start with ads for quick enquiries and build SEO in parallel.

Can SEO be done on an existing website?

Yes. The work starts with an audit, and the technical and content fixes are then rolled out in stages, beginning with the ones that block crawling and indexing.

Does a new website need SEO from day one?

Yes. A logical structure, unique titles and descriptions, fast loading, a sitemap and structured data should be built in before launch, because fixing them later usually costs more. Every codeyev website ships with this technical base.
