What does AI agent development include?

AI agent development usually combines three things. A chatbot answers questions. An AI agent also acts: it can check stock, create a lead in your CRM, book a slot or send a report. Automation is the plumbing behind both — a workflow that moves data between your apps on a trigger, with or without AI.

What can an AI agent do for a small business?

The best candidates are tasks that repeat many times a day and follow clear rules. Typical flows:

• lead capture — the agent asks the right questions in WhatsApp or Instagram Direct and sends a complete lead to your CRM or sales chat;
• 24/7 answers — prices, delivery, opening hours and product details from your own knowledge base, at night and at weekends;
• orders and bookings — collecting the order or the preferred time and passing it to your team or booking system;
• reports — a daily or weekly summary of leads, orders or ad results sent to Telegram or email.

If a task needs judgement, negotiation or a personal touch, the agent prepares the details and a person finishes the job.

Which channels and systems can it connect to?

An agent is useful only if it lives where your customers already write. The usual channels are WhatsApp through Meta’s official WhatsApp Business Platform, Instagram Direct for professional accounts, a chat widget on your website and Telegram bots.

Behind the scenes, n8n connects the agent to CRM systems, Google Sheets, email, payment systems and any service with an API. Leads from ads fit in naturally: a click-to-WhatsApp ad from your digital marketing campaigns can open a chat that the agent answers first. Why build it on n8n?

n8n is a workflow automation platform with built-in AI features, released under a fair-code licence. It gives you three practical advantages:

• transparency — every workflow is a visual diagram, so you can see exactly what happens to each message;
• ownership — it can run on your own server or in n8n Cloud, and the workflows stay yours;
• flexibility — the AI model can be changed later without rebuilding the whole system.

How are quality and human handoff handled?

AI models can make mistakes, so the agent is designed with limits. It is instructed to answer only from the information you approve, follows written rules about what it may promise, and hands the conversation to a person whenever a case is complex, sensitive or outside its scope. Your team gets the full chat history with the handoff.

What does an AI agent cost to run?

There are two kinds of cost. The setup is a one-time package fee, starting at $300 for Starter (all packages are in the pricing table below). Running costs are separate and depend on volume:

• AI model usage — billed by the API provider according to how much the agent processes;
• hosting — a small server for self-hosted n8n or an n8n Cloud plan;
• WhatsApp messages — Meta charges for template messages, such as marketing messages; free-form replies within 24 hours of a customer’s last message are free, and a chat started from a click-to-WhatsApp ad opens a 72-hour free window if you reply within the first 24 hours.
